There you are, solitary in the middle of a pitch-black hole. How did you get there, and how could you get out? You’re shouting, screaming, signaling to the outside world, but everything seems to return to you like a boomerang. Nothing can escape the horizon, or does it? Is there something or someone out there who might see or hear your experience inside?

‘The Solitary One’ is a performative installation transforming the most extreme and paradoxical object that our universe harbours – a black hole – into an immersive audiovisual experience.

Visual artist Klaas Verpoest, sound artist Vincent Caers and cellist-composer Benjamin Glorieux tend to unite art and science in their individual work. A shared fascination for the inexplicable aspects of a black hole and the concepts of space and time led to a joint venture in which they explore the artistic potential of their combined disciplines for illustrating these themes. Along the way they collaborated with theoretical physicist Stéphane Detournay. Their aim is not to provide a scientific explanation, which remains the scientist’s task, but instead to create an immersive installation offering the audience an opportunity for experiencing cosmological phenomena and the incredible forces driving them.

To the Edge of Time

Time is the most mundane thing in the world. We all use it every day; we waste it, save it, and enjoy it. It’s just out there, like a big clock, ticking away. But what is time? What is it made of? Did it have a beginning? Will it ever end? Does it cycle around? Can we do without time?

In this lecture-performance, electronic musician Vincent Caers, theoretical physicist Thomas Hertog, and visual artist Klaas Verpoest take you on a voyage into a black hole, to the edge of time … and beyond.

The concert takes place in an inflatable dome and immerses the audience in a journey in 360º generative image and sound.

Octophonie & Signale zur Invasion | Karlheinz Stockhausen

Signale zur Invasion (1992) is performed simultaneously with Octophonie (1991), both pieces are part of Dienstag from Stockhausen’s monumental Opera Cycle Licht. The trombonist plays and walks a parcours amongst the audience whilst the video-artist divides it into equal protanganists.

Karlheinz Stockhausen was a radical, an extremely important but also controversial innovator. He is also one of the most important musical minds of the past century. His electronic music inspired several generations of musicians, even outside the realm of so-called art music. He broke rules and traversed boundaries. His music was extremely complex, but in all the abstraction it is also sensual and engaging.

Tom lanoye declameert met verve – in de hem zo eigen stijl – een avondvullende, aangrijpende theatersolo.
‘Niemandsland/Overkant’, Gedichten uit de Groote Oorlog.

De Eerste Wereldoorlog wordt ook wel ‘the Literary War’ genoemd, omdat er zoveel gedichten geschreven werden over deze wereldbrand. De meeste nog tijdens het conflict zelf. Uit die overdonderde poëtische erfenis puurde Tom Lanoye jaren geleden al twee bloemlezingen van radicaal bewerkte verzen: traditionele in ‘Niemands Land’, meer experimentele in ‘Overkant’. Die beide bundels zijn heruitgebracht in één band.

De Gentse componist Daan Janssens schreef een nieuw werk dat speciaal geconcipieerd werd om een geheel te vormen met Quando Stanno Morendo. (…nada.) is het derde deel uit Jannsens’ cyclus (Paysages – études). De uitvoering is in handen van het Belgische ensemble Aton’&Armide (Benjamin Glorieux and Sara Picavet) en Centre Henri Pousseur.

Daan Janssens ( 1983) was nog geen dertig toen zijn opera De Blinden in enkele grote Belgische huizen zoals De Munt en Concertgebouw Brugge werd uitgevoerd. En nog geen jaar geleden speelde het Gulbenkian Orchestra zijn tweede orkestwerk (…revenir dans l’oubli…). Janssens’ muziek is eerder een voortzetting van dan een reactie op de klassieke muziektraditie. Flitsende multimedia zijn niet zo aan hem besteed en ‘conceptualistisch’ is zijn werk doorgaans ook al niet te noemen. Wel boetseert hij met klanken, melodieën, thema’s, harmonieën, … om naar aloude traditie een muzikale spanningsboog te ontwikkelen. Uiteraard doet hij dat niet op de manier van Beethoven, Brahms of Schönberg – om boeiend en prikkelend te zijn moet nieuwe muziek immers ook nieuwe wegen verkennen, muzikale verhalen laten horen die nog niet verteld zijn.

A gently paced film animation – a boundless wander through imaginary cities. This long adventure is responded to by Aperghis’ music.
The project Happy End is the result of a remarkable artistic triangle: the French composer Georges Aperghis, the Belgian visual artists Hans Op de Beeck, Bruno Hardt and Klaas Verpoest and a tale by Charles Perrault (Tom Thumb, Le Petit Poucet).

Op 9 maart ging in NTGent De vreemde smetten in première, met spitsbroeders Ramsey Nasr de Nederlands-Palestijnse dichter-acteur en Mauro Pawlowski de Pools-Italiaanse zanger-gitarist in de hoofdrol. Het was een show met vaderlandse gedichten, polyfone gezangen, liederen van Purcell, slechte grappen, irritante onzin en veel te lange gitaarsolo’s.

Sprakeloos Op De Planken | Tom Lanoye

Sprakeloos op de planken is de ijzersterke monoloog die Lanoye uit zijn boek heeft gepuurd en die hij, als doorgewinterd podiumdier, ook zelf voor het voetlicht brengt. Hij zal niet voorlezen, maar belooft te reciteren, ‘als een gemankeerd acteur in het lijf van een hopelijk goed schrijver’.

Sprakeloos op de planken bewaart de centrale lijn van het boek.
Na een beroerte raakt een schrijversmoeder haar spraakvermogen kwijt en takelt onherroepelijk af,
steeds minder in staat om te communiceren met wie haar lief is.
Tegelijk maakt haar zoon de schrijver een meervoudige balans op.
Van zijn kleurrijke jeugd in een volkswijk, van zijn worsteling met de liefde,
van zijn conflicten met de kleine moederdiva, van de strijd die zij manmoedig voert
en waarin ze reddeloos en redeloos ten onder gaat – en van de blijvende woede en pijn die dat oplevert.
